Experimental research on the work of sworn translators, conference and community interpreters

MA Seminar (WF.PKBP2.3AZ)

Lecturer: Katarzyna Liber-Kwiecińska, Ph.D.

The seminar is devoted to the work of sworn translators, conference and community interpreters and covers, among others, the following areas: the interpreter’s cooperation with authorities and institutions, ethical aspects of the interpreter’s and translator’s work, the practical dimension of the communication with the recipients, psychological aspects of the interpreter’s work, the interpreter’s credibility, non-verbal communication in the interpreter’s work, etc. The seminar is meant for those interested in conducting experimental research, those willing to carry out field work and to explore the nature of interpreter’s work with the use of interdisciplinary tools.

During the course, we shall discuss the assumptions of experimental methodology, the option of using qualitative or quantitative methods. We will learn the tools that make work with data easier, we will talk about research ethics and integrity, and we shall learn a critical approach to sources and scientific data. The participants will get to know what makes a good BA thesis, what mistakes are common among graduate students, and what details need to be taken care of.

In order to join the seminar, you need an open mind, the eagerness to explore reality and to test your ideas on yourself and others. During the course, we will discuss, criticise, analyse and present data. Within this seminar, you can only write your thesis in Polish!

MA seminar 2020/2021 (3rd and 4th semester of the second cycle)

Seminarium magisterskie 2020/2021 – Przekład I (WF.PKBP2.1AZ)

Lecturer: Olga Mastela, Ph.D.

The seminar is devoted to writing a master’s thesis in Translation Studies in one of the three formats: a contrastive analysis, a translation with commentary or a glossary. Depending on their research themes, students will be exploring the following fields of Translation Studies: artistic translation (including literary, audio-visual and melic translation), audio-description and transcreation. In addition, there will be an opportunity to prepare a terminological MA thesis within the frames of the Jagiellonian University’s Chair for Translation Studies’ cooperation with the DGT (the European Commission Directorate-General for Translation).

The problem of cultural transfer in translation

MA Seminar 2020/2021 (WF.PKBP2.2AZ)

Lecturer: Caterina Squillace, Ph.D.

Leading language of classes: EN / PL

The purpose of the seminar is to present the translation as an act of intercultural communication and discuss issues related to cultural transfer from a diachronic and synchronous perspective. The seminar also emphasises the so-called "Meaning-making process", which makes words seemingly similar from a reference point of view in various languages, while in fact they are very different from a semantic point of view. The approach to the problems referred to above will be interdisciplinary.

The classes will also discuss issues regarding the writing of an MA thesis, namely the choice of a proper research goal and methodology, of logical argumentation as well as issues related to collecting the selection of an appropriate and comprehensive bibliography.

Students will be asked to prepare seminar papers as well as papers and multimedia presentations in order to develop the necessary skills to write a scientific paper, analyse and criticise text.
