THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

"INFORMATION PRACTICES OF INTERPRETERS
AND TRANSLATORS"

March 8-9, 2024

online, MS Teams

Let's meet to honor the tedious, invisible and rarely described work of interpreters and translators who, before delivering their final output to the client, ought to search for, retrieve, filter, assess, compile and interiorize information relevant to the purposes of translation/interpretation.
We invite you to discover the arcana of information practices deployed by translators & interpreters who, in order to translate/interpret, need first to understand the original content and, consequently, find information necessary for this understanding.
Let's share our respective know-how about efficient ways of retrieving exact resource and manage our professional information collections.
Let's listen to how scholars describe the activities of translators & interpreters in the language of science.
Together, in the circle of translators, interpreters and scholars, let's consider what the development of artificial intelligence and other technological mutations mean for our professions.
Let's appreciate our own skills and learn from the competences of others.

The conference is open to all the actors of communication processes mediated by translation & interpretation: translators & interpreters of all specialties, scholars representing all disciplines, students and doctoral students, as well as recipients of translation/interpretation services: translation/interpretation agencies, publishing houses, journalists, readers and all interested parties.

The conference takes place remotely on the MS Teams platform on Friday and Saturday, March 8-9, 2024.

The proceedings are held mainly in Polish (see the PROGRAM_EN_updated.docx)

Keynote speeches are delivered by:

  1. active interpreters and translators working with Polish,
  2. researchers in translation studies, who combine their academic career with working as active translators/interpreters,
  3. scholars representing information science (informatology).

Two forms of speeches are proposed to the attendance:

  1. 40-, 60- or 90-minute case-study workshop sessions led by professional translations or interpreters, during which they present in detail their own information practices mobilized for the needs of a specific TR or INT project; each session is followed by a discussion with the audience;
  2. 20-minutes concise speeches given by scholars in information science and translation studies, aimed at mapping common research areas of both disciplines, with an emphasis on information literacy and the role of new technologies (including artificial intelligence) in the activity of translators & interpreters.

The conference opens with a special guest speech by an eminent expert in artificial intelligence, Professor Mariusz Flasiński, Chair of the Information Technology Systems Department of the Jagiellonian University.

Conference topics:

  • information practices of literary translators,
  • information practices of interpreters, including professionals working in international institutions or diplomacy,
  • information practices of specialist translators,
  • information literacy of translators and interpreters,
  • common fields and research methods of translation studies and information science,
  • new technologies in translators’ & interpreters’ work, including artificial intelligence,
  • specific information behaviours of translators & interpreters (e.g. explicitation).

Conference goals:

  • Enabling conference participants to directly acquire knowledge about real and efficient information practices applied by active translators and interpreters (information retrieval, selection, merging, processing, etc.), and then use it in their own scholarly or translation/interpretation work.
  • Recapitulating the current state of the art on the impact of artificial intelligence on the information behaviour of translators & interpreters.
  • Obtaining a unique research insight into information behaviours of active interpreters and translators working in Polish.
  • Determining common research and implementation areas of translation studies and information science (informatology).
