Seminaria 2 rok - Katedra Przekładoznawstwa

MA Seminar - Translation 1

dr Mariusz Marczak

In this course, we learn all that is necessary to plan, write and successfully deliver an MA dissertation in Translation Studies (TS). The main research areas covered in this seminar are selected aspects of the use of translation technologies, e.g. Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT), Machine Translation (MT) and AI, as well as contemporary translator education, including translator competence and methods in Translation Pedagogy. The coursework involves both a theoretical and practical component; we conduct discussions, deliver presentations and learn to collect, analyse and describe research data through mini research projects and critically analyse selected TS publications. In addition, we explore the aforementioned technologies and learn how to use computerised bibliography management tools, so that we can easily organise sources, compile a bibliography list and insert in-text references; all with a view to writing more efficiently.

MA Seminar - Translation 2

dr Olga Mastela

The seminar is devoted to writing a master’s thesis in Translation Studies in one of the three formats: a contrastive analysis, a translation with commentary or a glossary. Depending on their research themes, students will be exploring the following fields of Translation Studies: artistic translation (including literary, audio-visual and melic translation), audio-description and transcreation. In addition, there will be an opportunity to prepare a terminological MA thesis within the frames of the Jagiellonian University’s Chair for Translation Studies’ cooperation with the DGT (the European Commission Directorate-General for Translation).

MA Seminar - Translation 3

dr Agnieszka Seweryn

The MA seminar focuses on the broadly understood issue of transferring culture-bound items in translation with particular consideration of such aspects as: strategies and techniques of translating culturemes; identifying and translating proper names in different types of source items; intertextuality and references to the various aspects of the source culture; humor in translation. The MA thesis may be of a translation or linguistic nature.

During the first semester we will be focusing mainly on the technical rules, tips and tricks of writing the MA thesis. You will be also choosing your topics. From the second semester onwards the seminar will be conducted in the form of regular individual consultation combined with joint meetings, where we practice together a vista translation and discuss our research.

You may write your thesis in Polish, Russian or English language. In the case of a thesis written in English, consultation with an English philologist is welcome.

Possible forms of the thesis: 1. own translation with commentary; 2. comparative analysis of the ST and the translation/series of translations; 3. analytical and descriptive work.

Areas of translation: literary translation, audiovisual translation, video game localization.
