MA seminar 2
Dr Krzysztof Łoboda
Master's seminar “Specialised Translation and New Language Technologies”.
Description
The proposed master's seminar on “Specialised Translation and New Language Technologies” focuses on the study of translation using modern tools and methods in the translation of specialised texts, with the ultimate goal of the participant writing the thesis necessary for obtaining a master's degree. The research work can cover translation processes (and their impact on the target text), as well as the translation product itself, i.e. the translation into a given language. In the latter case, the translation analysis in the MA thesis must be based on a corpus of domain-specific texts such as documents, audiovisual materials or software collected by the seminar participant. In addition to the rules, tips and tricks of writing the diploma thesis, the first year of the seminar will briefly discuss the language services industry, translation processes in large LSPs and multilingual institutions, translation tools (including tools for computer-assisted translation, terminology management, quality assurance, as well as AI/neural network-based technologies, such as machine translation engines, LLM models), and corpus tools. The second year of the seminar will be devoted to writing a master's thesis.
Languages of the seminar: English and Polish.
Proposed topics
- terminological problems, levels of equivalence in different language versions; - analysis of the process or product of translation (e.g., human vs. postedited/raw MT output obtained with NMT/LLM models);
- register, functional equivalence and cultural problems in non-literary translation (marketing/AV material, game localization, etc.)
Possible forms of the thesis
1. theoretical and empirical study of a translation phenomenon or problem; 2. terminological project (trilingual glossary with description); 3. self-translation with analytical commentary on translation strategies and procedures.
Preferred languages of the workPolish or English, French possible.
For smaller corpora of texts, it will be required to collect material for two target languages of translation. For languages other than PL and EN, language consultation required.
Areas of translation
Specialised translation (legal, institutional, technical, medical, economic translation, localization of commercial software and games). For domain-specific texts, educational background and/or experience in the field or consultation with an expert is required.
Credits
Delivery of presentation on a selected problem is required from students to obtain credits for semester one.
In the second semester, the seminar participants are required to plan a research project related to the thesis, to create a research paper outline with preliminary results or a thesis chapter, all delivered with a bibliography no later than September 15th.
